It's just too bad there wasn't a small part for the real comedians from those movies, that would have been a nice addition. The driving force behind National Lampoon was Doug Kenney (Will Forte), and his truly wild and crazy story unfolds in A Futile and Stupid Gesture from Harvard to Hollywood to Caddyshack and beyond. This is a good movie. Will forte did a superb job as Kenney but the story was lackluster. After looking up Douglas Kenney (quote: Though almost completely unknown, this man was one of the originators of a highly popular and groundbreaking new form of comedy and satire) and reading his full biography I admit I never heard of him before, even though I watched Animal House and Caddyshack, like everybody else probably. National Lampoon is a name everybody knows or has heard of, and this movie is a nice hommage to one of the co-founders, maybe a bit excentric, certainly not a fully happy man, but with a fascinating life. A Futile and Stupid Gesture is a terrific movie with a very well developed plot and an outstanding comedic cast. Unfortunately, for all his success, Doug Kenney with his overhanging insecurities, ego and irresponsible appetites began to consume him until he alienates everyone who ever cared and supported him even as they imitated him. Great cast, super witty.

Once you've seen a couple VH1's "Behind the Music" you've seen them all - and you've also seen this film.

In the end, this iconoclastic funnyman would come to a tragedy that comes when your comedy doesn't have enough distance. The film stars Will Forte as comedy writer Douglas Kenney, during the rise and fall of National Lampoon. Perfectly orchestrated. But watching Will Forte is always funny. At other times, it detracts from the core story at hand.Although the film lacks his absurdism, there’s a musicality to Wain’s direction that’s addicting, and the emotional punch in the final five minutes proves there’s a future for the filmmaker that goes way beyond the yucks.It’s not particularly illuminating, but it’s far from futile.Even though the use of one particular plot device ends up feeling unnecessary and Will Forte can often appear miscast in the lead role, A Futile and Stupid Gesture still conjures up enough real emotions and inventive moments to feel like a worthwhile addition to Hollywood’s often tired biopic subgenre.While pretty consistently amusing, the film still suffers from a chronic case of Wikipediitis, recreating Kenney’s bullet-point moments as substitution for original wit or drama.Maybe this is exactly the biopic that Kenney would want, silly and bittersweet and laced with regret.
