Beginning just after the bloody Sioux victory over General Custer at Little Big Horn, the story is told through two unique perspectives: Charles Eastman, a young, white-educated Sioux doctor held up as living proof of the alleged success of assimilation, and Sitting Bull the proud Lakota chief whose tribe won the American Indians’ last major victory at Little Big Horn. Sir, if every individual were taken personally under your care, as was my good fortune, I admit, the outcome might be what you seek.

If you haven't read the book, or knew nothing of the history of this story, you would be completely lost. He hovered between these two civilizations, never finding reconciliation — never being fully identified as an Indian and never being fully identified as a white. 12 out of 27 found this helpful.
06min. Everything and everyone involved in this production was presented in such a way as to be a cliché, an unfortunate stereotype of the real events and people this show was based upon. So when I saw that HBO was making a movie of Bury My Heart, I was thrilled. But I am not the example you held up to The Friends of the Indian.
First off, I haven't seen the production of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. I read "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" the summer of the year it was published. In past programs they have done such an excellent job of portraying an era, Rome being one very effective example. A troubled foster child with an affinity for drawing and artwork, becomes attached to her eccentric and forgetful new foster mother, also an artist. The movie, however, is a disappointment. When the government of America's European settlers defeated the indigenous population, they didn't directly massacre or enslave them (at least, not in every case). It's no secret that movies mix a lot of fiction with the facts. He then worked as a doctor on several tribal reservations.Eastman’s story — and those of the Lakota chief Sitting Bull and U.S. But it was also true in showing the ignorance on both sides and lack of understanding what truly needs to be done to attain peace. I'm rarely if ever disappointed by any movies HBO makes, but I was disappointed enough with wasting two hours on this one that I felt compelled to say something. He was assimilated into white culture, did very well through school, graduated from Dartmouth, and became one of the first Native Americans to earn a medical degree. Was this review helpful?
So they proceeded to that village so that they could have killed more Lakota!! If I had my druthers, I guess I'd side with those reviewers who feel a more complete story could have been told using a mini-series format. If you’ve read the book, you know it’s a chronicle of different conflicts between Native American tribes and the government. Both were well done.
The cinematography had some great senic shots but there were some mistakes and the special effects were superbly done.
But this isn't a documentary.
His story is symbolic of the conflict, which still exists between the two civilizations.The opening voiceover in the movie is of Elaine Goodale [played by Anna Paquin], a teacher who married Charles Eastman.
Having just spent the past 18 months studying Native American philosophy and having just returned from a week at Cherokee, learning the language and culture up close, I can say this film does help express the complex and heart-rending story of the relationship between the invaders and the conquered in our years 1870-1890. I don’t have an answer, and I don’t raise it as criticism. But I read the book. It isn’t a novel. The only reason I am giving this movie an "8" is because I can see why some people might be confused.

The book on which the movie is based is a history of Native Americans in the American West in the 1860s and 1870s, focusing upon the transition from traditional … It's really sad because I would have expected so much more from HBO. But the movie, as far as I'm concerned is outstanding. In the 1880s, after the U. S. Army's defeat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the government continues to push Sioux Indians off their land. 5 out of 12 found this helpful. It also would have been nice to see the Native Americans speaking their own language however all of the actors all did an outstanding job in their roles. These nations consist of so many different groups, but are not ever mentioned or described in the movie, and the massacre at Chankpe Opi Wakpala or Wounded Knee itself is merely a small side event in the tale.

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (DVD) : By 1876, most of the nation's American Indians had been forcibly relocated to reservation land. It's a wounded knee but the body is missing. Only after that point did they come to see this land, the It’s an interesting issue, which I think is being raised in this movie for the first time in dramatic fashion.
