Barock Pinto

During the 1960’s Bonte Nico was the most popular and controversial horse in Holland and often appeared in the newspaper on a weekly basis.

In 1965, the AID wrote many fines to the owners of mares that were bred with Bonte Nico.

Origami's sire was the renowned Dutch Warmblood Grand Prix Dressage stallion and the foundation sire of pinto sporthorses in the US "Art Deco" .

Mrs. Massaneck has made a big contrabution to the barockpinto breed over the years.

His offspring started to notice this breeding program, as many of his offspring were sold to the circus. of the first well known stallions was Bonte Nico.

Both  stand to outside mares, owned by Excalibur Friesians in CA,  Peter has several nice foals on the ground both here and in EuropeTop Hat Friesians and Barockpintos in FL is another good resourse for BPs here in the US, they own an Albano son Picasso, as well as several imported mares. One of the registries for the breed in europe, there are several others to choose from as well.I had the pleasure of meeting Willem and his rider Bennie in person at the Barockpinto Kuering March 2014. Pinto/Friesian or Barock Pinto horses that were IMPORTED from Europe, with a portion of non-documented Friesian heritage, will be considered for the BPF book on a case by case basis.

The Barock Pinto breed originated in the Netherlands in 1957 when a purebred Friesian mare was bred to a Groningen stallion to produce Bonte Nico, who was also known as Nico van Friesland. Dreamgait is a great contact for Barockpintos as well as purebred Friesians.

She also owned several other Barockpinto stallions and paticipated in many expos show casing her special horses   Mrs Masseneck and one of her Barockpintos!!! Unfortunely over the years Nico and most of his male offspring have died tragicly. In September of 1966, Nico was the big attraction during the ‘Sneek Bunte Happe Happening ‘, where he was the highlight, showing nineteen offspring. Initially, mister Hellinga sr. mostly used Nico for breeding his own mares and his sons’ mares. His popularity reached such large proportions, that he was featured in, not only regional but also national newspapers, on a regular basis.

Her Dam, Origami, was trained up to four level dressage prior to suffering an injury. Rachel Blaney in Canada has a Friesian x Warmblood daughter of Nico that she is breeding back to a ster Friesian staliion and may have foals for sale.

They are a true asset to the future of the Barockpintos here in the US. It started out as a cross between a friesian and the Gelderlander. who is sire to Picasso owned by Tophat Friesians and BarockpintosBy far the most acomplised Barockpinto stallion in dressage is Willem Van Nassau, bred and owned by Arnold Wemmenhove. Below is our homozygous pinto stud colt International Playboy Larz , he is a WOW!!! One remaining grandson is still alive and at Hidden Promise Sport horses in TN . !While Nico himself (picutured at left in a breeding advertisement from 1966 was not really what I consider to be a beautiful horse, his contributions to the breed are undeniable.

The popularity of the offspring also was reflected in money. Look at his mane!

Unfortunely over the years Nico and most of his male offspring have died tragicly. An * asterisk behind a horse's name means some portion of Friesian heritage can not be verified, therefore their percentage of Friesian heritage is estimated. One of Nicos sons Bonte Bertus had several notable offspring including Bonte Bart and Nico II  (they love to use the name Nico and also Bart  so try not to confuse Nico with Nico I , Nico II or the just place Nico that was in the US, ,he was totally unrelated to all these other Nico’sOne of my favorites is Bonte Bart(pictured below)  Bonte Bart was owned by Sonja Massanneck in Germany. at 18 yrs preforming and promoting the barockpinto breedThe Barockpinto has been being bred in Europe for many, many generations.

Anna is a 50% Friesian and 50% Oldenburg, Barock Pinto mare. He intervened personally twice, to have Nico been given the green light, for all breeding. Popular in the Netherlands during the 60s for the beautifuly colored foals he produced.
