In 1833, he married Mary Coffee, daughter of Jackson’s friend John Coffee, and moved to Alabama. Jackson was the first president to have grown up poor and on the western frontier. Andrew Jr. and his twin, Thomas Jefferson Donelson, remained close all of their lives. He made the presidency more powerful and helped to found the Democratic Party. Andrew Jr. and Sarah Yorke Jackson had five children: Rachel, Andrew, Samuel, Thomas and Robert.

This boy, Lyncoya, (c1811-1828), may have originally been intended as merely a companion for Andrew Jr., but Jackson soon took a strong interest in him.Lyncoya was educated along with Andrew Jr., and Jackson had aspirations of sending him to West Point, as well.
