calaveras fault zone

We resolve 1992-2011 interseismic deformation in the San Francisco Bay Area using InSAR time-series analysis of over 250 ERS and Envisat SAR acquisitions. It is believed to link with the Hayward fault, as well as the To the east of the Hayward-Rodgers Creek fault, the Calaveras fault extends 123 km (76 mi), splaying from the San Andreas fault near Hollister and terminating at Danville at its northern end.The Calaveras Fault was named for Calaveras Creek in A number of magnitude 6 earthquakes have been recorded on the fault throughout recorded history, the largest of which was a magnitude 6.5 that occurred in 1911 in the Although it has been known for some time that the Calaveras and Hayward faults merge in the South Bay region, recent geological studiesUSGS ShakeMaps showing intensity patterns for the 1984 Morgan Hill (left) and 2007 Alum Rock events The increased length of a potential rupture involving the Hayward and central Calaveras Faults (up to ~160 km long) could generate earthquakes much larger than M7, especially given that creeping patches may participate in a rupture in the presence of dynamic weakening. The high spatial resolution of the InSAR velocity map enables identification of the southernmost occurrence of creep on the Hayward fault, which is located ~15 km farther south than previously documented from alignment arrays (in Fremont). Our new geometry of the Hayward-Calaveras Fault zone should be used as a basis for earthquake process modeling and ground motion simulations to reevaluate seismic hazard in the Bay Area. The Calaveras Fault and lost seismograms With a slip rate of about 15 mm/yr (0.6 in/yr) and a length of about 100 km (60 mi), the Calaveras is highly active and certainly capable of a M7+ earthquake. Between the faults lies an area of minor faults aligned en echelon known as the Contra Costa Shear Zone. To maintain coherence across the Calaveras fault, despite the transition from urban areas to vegetated hillslopes, we develop an alternative Small Baseline Subset (SBAS) time series method, in which the image-pair selection is based on the percentage of coherent pixels in each interferogram in an area that spans the fault. The San Andreas Fault is a continental transform fault that extends roughly 1,200 kilometers (750 mi) through California. The Sargent, Calaveras, and San Andreas fault converge southward into the San Benito River Valley in the region south of Hollister and Pinnacles National Park. The Hayward Fault ends just short of the Calaveras Fault, which runs about 123 kilometers from north of Danville south to Hollister in the Salinas Valley. Our new model of the Hayward-Calaveras Fault zone geometry argues for a direct connection via a dipping wedge-shaped fault plane to reconcile the occurrence of creep 10 km south of the deep Mission Peak connection. The 19 years mean horizontal velocity map obtained by combining multiple viewing geometries allows for direct comparison with BAVU3 GPS velocities showing an agreement of ±2 mm/yr, demonstrating that InSAR enables resolving vertical and horizontal deformation partitioning in the Bay Area for signals as small as 2 mm/yr over both short and long wavelengths. The Hayward and Calaveras Faults, two strike-slip faults of the San Andreas Fault System passing through the East San Francisco Bay Area and accommodating ~30% of the relative motion between the North American and Pacific plates, are commonly considered … Based on present creep rates, the fault can be divided into two overall segments; that south of the Calaveras Reservoir, and the San Ramon segment (Kelson, et al, 1992), between Sunol and Danville. The Calaveras fault system stretches 131 km, from south of Hollister, northward, into the Danville-Walnut Creek area (Taylor, 1992). It forms the tectonic boundary between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate, and its motion is right-lateral strike-slip (horizontal). The Calaveras fault zone is located in the eastern San Francisco Bay region and generally trends along the eastern side of the East Bay Hills, bounds the western side of San Ramon Valley, extends into the western Diablo Range, bounds the eastern side of Santa Clara Valley, extends into Hollister Valley, and eventually joins the San Andreas fault zone … The West Napa Fault in Napa County is believed to be a continuation of the Calaveras Fault north of the Carquinez Strait.

These shallow repeaters align well with the southernmost Hayward creep observed on the InSAR velocity map, suggesting that the two faults’ surface traces meet at this location. Other faults in the region include the Quien Sabe and Tres Pinos fault zones in the hills south and east of Hollister. We rely on Characteristically Repeating Earthquakes (CREs) to refine our understanding of the interaction between the Calaveras and Hayward faults. Accordingly, the two faults should be treated as a single, continuous structure with potential for earthquake ruptures propagating across. Most Californians live within 30 miles of an active fault 15,700 Known faults in California (and scientists continue to discover new ones) Select your county from the dropdown menu above, or click on your county on the California map to the left to learn more about … On the other hand, the intermediate depth repeaters are essentially continuous between the central Hayward and south Calaveras faults ~10 km farther north than the surface creep, suggesting that the Hayward fault dips to the northeast and the two faults merge farther north at depths of ~5 km.
