I don't think the revenge plot was given enough attention for me to really care about it. To my knowledge, this is the last book in the series.

I agree with other reviewers that there was a little too much Sherlock for a Mycroft adventure, but I think Sherlockians will enjoy being there with Sherlock as he matures, when he is discovering the joy that investigation brings him and beginning to hone his craft. Come for the mystery, stay for the prickly banter between the world's greatest detective and his cleverer older brother. KAJ and Waterhouse also do a beautiful job of portraying the people of various ethnicities in these stories in nuanced, deeply humanizing ways while showing the historical circumstances they inhabit. The characters are delightful. And the character of Douglas is interesting - a black man in those times, late 1800's, must have really stood out in Victorian England, and must have endured many indignities. He weaved interesting cultural and historical information in the story as well. Definitely dragged for me.This book is the best Sherlock Holmes pastiche I've read in a long time. Didn't realize this was the second in a series, but I wasn't confused or anything while reading it. The dead child was the main mystery at first, not the ritualized murders, but the kid felt like an afterthought in the end. And though there are little tidbits that refer back to the first book, Kareem and I tried hard to make sure that you could pick it up and read it as a standalone. There are two mysteries in The Empty Birdcage, one for each Holmes. In this way, I felt the two stories were almost disjointed and should have been two books instead of one. Mycroft and Sherlock are actually on completely different investigations.

Thoroughly enjoyable read.A fairly enjoyable mystery is bogged down by trying too hard: too many convoluted sentences attempting to replicate Victorian speech, too many info details trying too hard to replicate the time and place, and so forth.Although it took me a long time to read, it was a very good book and looking at the ending, I certainly hope there's a third book on the way.As someone who has read and loved anything to do with Sherlock Holmes for decades, I enjoyed this book.
