In 1995 the AHS assumed full responsibility for breeding Hanoverians in this country. Each year the AHS organizes a national inspection tour to register foals, inspect and performance test mares, and license stallions. Perhaps one of the oldest Warmbloods alive today, the Hanoverian has a decorated history that dates back to the 17th century. Breeding eligibility is verified annually.Only foals from AHS inspected and approved parents may be register with the AHS. Today, the horse is more commonly observed in leisure riding and eventing, and is well conformed for harness work, light draught and agricultural work, and several competition disciplines. It is talented enough to compete on the world stage and has the temperament to make a family riding horse. German and American inspectors evaluate mares for type, conformation and gaits. The average height for the breed is between 15.5-16.5 hands, and the most prevalent colours are bay, chestnut, brown, grey, and black. A horse with only one AHS approved parent (either a Hanoverian-papered Main Studbook dam or an Elite Hanoverian Stallion sire) is eligible for a Certificate of Pedigree which enables participation in the Once they have completed the final requirement of producing an AHS-registered foal within three years they are awarded the prestigious title of Elite Mare (EM).All stallion candidates must be presented for physical inspection.
